Carbonation of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash and the Impact on Metal Mobility
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration ~MSWI! is considered as hazardous waste that calls for a robust, reliable, and reasonable treatment technique. This investigation aims to assess the impact of CO2 partial pressure, water addition, time, and temperature on the stabilization of MSWI fly ash with particular emphasis on Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr. Carbonation and element mobility were studied by applying thermal analysis and leaching assays on fly ash samples treated according to a 2 factorial design. The relationship between the factors and the response variables was evaluated using partial least squares modeling. Chemical equilibrium calculations were performed so as to complement the experimental findings. Decalcification of carbonated fly ash in a typical Swedish landfill was estimated at 0.13 mm•yr Treatment through carbonation reduced the availability of Pb and Zn about 100 times and also the carbonate alkalinity of 7.4 eq•~kg•FS! ~FS represents the fixed solids! was remedied successfully. However, shortcomings that need to be resolved are the remobilization of Cr with time and the mobilization of Cd. DOI: 10.1061/~ASCE!0733-9372~2003!129:5~435! Metal distribution in incineration residues of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Japan.
This study aimed to identify distribution of metals and the influential factors on metal concentrations in incineration residues. Bottom ash and fly ash were sampled from 19 stoker and seven fluidized bed incinerators, which were selected to have a variety of furnace capacity, furnace temperature, and input waste. In the results, shredded bulky waste in input waste increased the concentration o...

Resource recovery plants with a waste presorting process prior to incineration have not been successfully implemented in many developing countries. At least two engineering projects were fully assessed in Taiwan for the possible installation of presorting facilities in order to increase the potential efficiency of material and energy recovery for municipal incinerators. But the reuse potential ...
متن کاملEnvironmental Management of Fly Ash Produced from the Incineration of Municipal Solid Waste
Incineration is a widely used and well established technology for the municipal solid waste (MSW) management. Modern MSW incineration plants are equipped with improved air pollution control (APC) systems, which reduce pollutants well below the established limits. The environmental concern has, thus, moved from the air emissions to the solid residues generated from the APC systems of the inciner...
متن کاملMetal partitioning in products of incineration of municipal solid waste.
Metals contained in the waste transfer to the waste incineration products, including flue gas, fly ash, and bottom ash, as different oxide, nitride, carbides, and other phases. Most of the metal-based phases formed in incineration are toxic and their emissions need to be strictly controlled. Therefore, behavior of metal species during incineration must be well understood. Such understanding is ...
متن کاملLeachability of Heavy Metals from Lightweight Aggregates Made with Sewage Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash
Lightweight aggregate (LWA) production with sewage sludge and municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is an effective approach for waste disposal. This study investigated the stability of heavy metals in LWA made from sewage sludge and MSWI fly ash. Leaching tests were conducted to find out the effects of MSWI fly ash/sewage sludge (MSWI FA/SS) ratio, sintering temperature and sinteri...
